Our Mission

This started with a nurse we know missing her renewal. Not through carelessness — she simply had no idea the date had passed, because Ohio does not mail reminders and nobody checks a state portal on a hunch. She lost three weeks of shifts sorting it out. When we went looking for a service that would have caught it, we found the state’s own lookup was clunky to search by name and had no way to tell you anything in advance.

So we built the thing we wanted: a search that actually works on a name, and a free alert that emails you months ahead. An expired licence can mean lost income, disciplinary action, and in some professions far worse. Almost none of that is caused by people not caring — it is caused by nobody telling them. That is the gap this site fills.

Our Data Source

Every record we show comes from the State of Ohio itself. We ingest Ohio's official licensure dataset published on data.ohio.gov — the same eLicense database behind the state's own lookup portal — and refresh it every day.

That means searches here return instantly and work reliably by name as well as by licence number, across roughly 2.1 million issued licences (plus around 300,000 published application records) spanning 262 licence types from all 24 Ohio agencies, boards, and commissions. We do not create, edit, or interpret license records — we make the state's public data easier to search and add the renewal reminders the state does not send.

What Else We Publish

Because we hold a complete copy of the state dataset, we can answer questions one-record-at-a-time lookups cannot. So we started publishing the analysis:

• Research reports computed in-house — how often Ohio nurses pass the NCLEX first time, how many licences carry a board action, and what every status label actually means. Each one states its method and its as-of date.
• Licence application history — a free lookup showing how many applications preceded a licence, built from Ohio’s published application records. It approximates licensure history and is not an official examination record.
• Guides on renewal, reinstatement, and reading a licence record correctly, plus career paths and a directory of all 24 boards.
• A plain-language FAQ for the questions we get most.

We write all of it ourselves, we date it, and we link to the primary source so you can check us.

Who Operates This Site

OhioLicenseCheck.com is built and operated by Covenant Media LLC, an independent software company based in Columbus, Ohio. We are a small, self-funded team of engineers — not a data broker, not a background-check company, and not a government contractor. The service is free to the public and funded by our optional developer API and advertising.

Questions, corrections, and data-removal requests all reach a real person. Write to us through our contact page and we respond directly.

How We Handle Data — Our Methodology

We publish our method because a verification service is only as trustworthy as the process behind it.

• Single source of truth. Every license record originates from the State of Ohio's official eLicense dataset. We never merge in third-party, scraped, or purchased records.
• Daily refresh. We reload the full statewide file every day, several times a day, and each record carries the state's own publication date so you can see how current it is.
• No editorial changes to records. We do not edit, score, rank, or interpret an individual's license. We display the status and sub-status exactly as the issuing board recorded them.
• Analysis is computed, not estimated. The statistics in our research reports are calculated directly from the complete dataset. We state the method and as-of date on every report.
• We label approximations. Where a measure approximates an official statistic — such as our exam-attempt analysis versus official NCLEX pass rates — we say so plainly and link the authoritative source.
• Corrections. If a record here is wrong, it almost always means the state record is wrong; we will tell you exactly which board to contact and re-check after the state file updates.

Editorial Standards

Our guides and data reports are written in-house by our team, reviewed against the primary sources they cite, and dated. We link directly to the responsible Ohio board or to federal sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics so readers can verify any claim themselves.

We do not publish sponsored articles, we do not accept payment for favourable coverage, and advertising is never allowed to influence what we write. Where a subject is sensitive — disciplinary records in particular — we deliberately report base rates and context rather than isolated numbers, because a statistic without context misleads. We collect only what is necessary to send you alerts: your email address or phone number and the licenses you want to monitor. We never sell your data, never send marketing emails, and make it easy to unsubscribe at any time.
