How do I verify an Ohio professional license?
Enter the person’s name or license number on our homepage. We query the official State of Ohio eLicense record and return the current status, license type, issuing board, and expiration date. It’s free and takes a few seconds. You can also verify directly on the state portal at elicense.ohio.gov.
Is OhioLicenseCheck an official government website?
No. OhioLicenseCheck is an independent service operated by Covenant Media LLC. We source our data from the official State of Ohio eLicense system and refresh it daily, but we are not affiliated with the State of Ohio or any licensing board. For legal or employment decisions, always confirm on the official state portal.
What does an "Active" license status mean?
Active is the only status that confirms a person is currently authorized to practice in their profession. Every other status — Inactive, Expired, Lapsed, Suspended, Revoked, and so on — means the person cannot be assumed to be practicing legally right now. See our full status dictionary for what each label means.
What is the difference between "Expired" and "Lapsed"?
Both mean the license is not current. "Expired" generally means the license term ended and wasn’t renewed by the deadline. "Lapsed" usually means a renewal was missed but the license may still be reinstatable with back fees and continuing education. The exact treatment depends on the board.
What is the difference between "Suspended" and "Revoked"?
A suspension is a temporary withdrawal of the license by board action — the holder may not practice during the suspension. A revocation is the board permanently ending the license, the most serious disciplinary outcome. Both are public disciplinary actions.
How often is your license data updated?
We refresh the full Ohio dataset daily from the official State of Ohio eLicense file. The record shown reflects the most recent daily update. For time-critical decisions, you can also confirm the live status on the official state portal.
Can I look up a license by name if I don’t have the number?
Yes. You can search by last name (and optionally first name). If several people share a name, we show a list so you can pick the right person. Searching by license number returns the exact record directly.
Do you cover all Ohio licensing boards?
Yes. We cover all 24 Ohio licensing boards and commissions — nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dental, cosmetology and barbering, engineering and surveying, accountancy, counseling and social work, veterinary medicine, and more — across 262 distinct license types.
How can I check when a license expires?
The expiration date appears on the license record when you look it up. You can also set a free renewal reminder: enter your email (and optionally a phone number) and we’ll alert you before your license expires, since most Ohio boards don’t mail renewal notices.
Are disciplinary actions shown?
The record reflects the status and any board-action flag recorded in the official data, including disciplinary statuses such as Suspended or Revoked. For the full detail of a disciplinary case, consult the specific board’s records, which we link from each board page.
How many times did someone take the licensing exam?
Our free exam-attempts tool estimates how many times a person applied before being licensed, using the application records Ohio publishes. Search a name to see the attempt history. Note this approximates exam sittings rather than being an official exam-attempt count.
Is this service free?
Yes. License lookups, status verification, the exam-attempts tool, and renewal reminders are all free. We also offer an optional API and MCP server for developers and businesses that need programmatic or bulk access.
How do I renew my Ohio license?
Renewals are handled on the official eLicense Ohio portal. Requirements — continuing education hours, fees, and renewal cycles — vary by board. Our board pages and guides summarize the requirements for each profession, and our reminders help you renew before the deadline.
Do you sell or share personal information?
No. We do not sell personal data. License information is public record from the state; the email or phone you provide for renewal reminders is used only to send those reminders and is never sold. See our privacy policy for details.
Can employers use this to verify staff licenses?
Yes. Employers commonly use OhioLicenseCheck to confirm that a professional holds an active Ohio license before hiring or during periodic compliance checks. For high-stakes decisions, confirm the result on the official state portal as your system of record.
What if I can’t find a license?
Check the spelling and try a last-name-only search. Some licenses are recorded under a former or legal name. If it still doesn’t appear, the person may not hold that Ohio license, or it may be under a different board — try the official eLicense Ohio portal as a second source.
